Description/Overview:
The Sentinel class was originally part of the emergency rearmament program of the Jovian Defense Forces started in 2178 and completed in 2181, however, the design never fit into the war strategy of Supreme Commander Edric VonStalin of the Pluto Republic. It was his design tems of the former United Nations Solar Empire that had designed and produced the Harpy class of heavy cruisers that the Sentinel class ships were derived from. While the Sentinel class was adequate to fill the needs of the Colonization fleets being sent out into the Local Group of Stars around Sol, they were not up to the standards that VonStalin required for his future plans regarding the Union of Solar Republics and Principality of Altair. The warp speed, weapons, and defenses of the Sentinel class were too weak and underclassed for his liking. Therefore in 2180 he commissioned a design group to redesign the Sentinel class into a vessel more suitable to his needs. The Type-81DD destroyer was the result. The main emphasis VanStalin wanted was removal of the six Lithgear LG-PC-300 PHELAC beam barbettes at the bow of the Sentinel with six ASM-10K anti-ship cruise missiles. He wanted true capital ship destroyer as the main fighting spacecraft of his fleets. The refit of his also allowed all of the existing Harpy class ships in the ex-Solar Empire fleet Pluto and the other Colonial Confederacy nations had to be quickly refit to the newer Type-81DD. With upgraded warp drives, deflector shield generators, and greatly improved weaponry, the Type-81DD was a formidable ship for its size. It served with distinction in the Ceres Conflict and Outer Sphere War, but was showing its age by the end of that conflict. In early 2190, VonStalin ordered the Type-81DD fleet to be upgraded. By 2192 the upgrade program to the destroyers were in full swing with more advanced weapons, shields, and warp drive.
