Description/Overview:
A part of VonStalin's plan to make an invincible space navy, the Glorious class of Dreadnought was the first Mark V Ironclad based on the Kiev class space battleship of the defunct UN Solar Empire. Totally independent of the Michael Romanov type refit, the Glorious created by the Pluto Republic was more than just a command/flag ship, it was meant to go toe-to-toe with the large warships of the Ceres Regency and Union of Solar Republics. Originally conceived of in 2180 AD as a Space Control Ship for use in the campaigns that VonStalin was planning against the Union of Solar Republics and the Ceres Regency, the Glorious design team modified the design to be a pure warship, with the ability to fight on its own without escort. On top of this, Lady Furrier wanted a whole new fleet of ships capable of autonomous operation without aid of escorts or large flotillas. The initial production run of Glorious class ships was completed in 2183 AD, this fleet consisted of four warships all fitted with heavy PHELAC turrets as their main battery. During the Ceres Conflict of the 2180s, this main battery of five dual PHELAC beam cannon turrets was replaced with dual EMPAC cannon turrets to overcome the energy resistant armor of Prodono type ships believed to be in the Ceres Space Navy. The most outstanding feature of the Glorious class was the oversized Intersection Drive Unit. Lady Furrier was keenly aware of the massive time dilation of the Prodono alien hyperspace fold flight system, and she needed a fleet of warships capable of shortening the gap between the considerably slower Terran Intersection Drives and the FTL engines of the alien ships. The Earth Federal Republic had begun using Type-3 Intersection Drive units in 2181 AD provided by the Lagrange "TransLight" company of L3-Space Island colony. The EFR configuration used two of the Type-3 FTL engines to propel their 580,000-ton Kongo class Space Battleships at a time-dilation of 0.36 light years per hour. The Pluto Republic obtained the plans for said drive system in late 2081 and by 2183 a new Type-4 Heavy Intersection Drive unit, capable of pushing a 900,000-ton ship through hyperspace at 0.28 light years per hour, was built for the Kirov and Glorious class warships. On the 750,000-ton Glorious the time-dilation was 0.51 light years per hour. A speed few Terran-borne ships could boast during the 2180s and early 2190s.
The second major feature of the Glorious was the use of a "universal" drive ring structure. This structure was intended for use in all Pluto Republic and Colonial Confederacy capital ships and was the first step in a truly modular space fleet design concept. Modular components were in use by the EFR prior to the Glorious, but were not "plug-and-play" like the Glorious and other Pluto spacecraft that used these systems.
The Glorious was built in enormous numbers for a space dreadnought during the Outer Sphere War with over thirty being constructed by war's end. This was due to the Colonial Confederacy's other two major powers getting contracts for these ships: Pluto had 12-Glorious class ships by 2186, Uranus had 10, and Neptune had 8. During the years prior to the 2nd Interplanetary War, the Glorious class would be upgraded yet again to a newer more powerful class of main space Dreadnought.
