Description/Overview:
The Outer Sphere War proved that the older 1st Interplanetary War era spacecraft were simply not up to the task of performing the missions of the Planetary Alliance space navy of the 2190s. The Ross 47 Conflict proved this beyond any shadow of doubt when the Tartarian Technocracy and Cosmo Dragoon forces went ship-to-ship with the older spaceships of the PA. It was under these conditions that the Potemkin class was born. Originally designed as a light cruiser, the new and rapidly changing dynamics of the battle for Xanadu colony and the Moon of Good Hope demoted the new design to that of a basic frigate. At 35,000 tons the Potempkin was fifteen thousand tons larger than the Hades class heavy frigate. Armed with newer, more powerful shields, weapons, engines, and reactors, the Potempkin was the main frigate for the initial phases of the Ross 47 conflict and the first year of the 2nd Interplanetary War. The main drawback of the Potempkin was the new, and experimental EMD and Stellar Warp Drive shared engine housing. While the EMD was supposed to be isolated from the Stellar Warp Drive nacelle, the two engines sometimes interfered with each other, usually causing the Stellar Warp Drive to malfunction and shut down. This issue was not common, not did it happen often, but it was enough of a concern that a newer Frigate was designed as quickly as possible to replace the Potempkin and fix this issue.
