DESCRIPTION:
The last class of vessel to be upgraded as part of the conversion from "Space Cruiser" type spacecraft to the "Cosmo Cruiser" type was the George Mason class dreadnought. As there were only five of these vessels after the Outer Sphere War, the sixth dreadnought of the George Mason class, SDN-021 George Washington, was built with the new refit systems in mind in 2188 and so its weapons and sublight engines were changed to meet the new requirements. The George Washington class however was refit again in 2191 after the Planetary Alliance "stole" the plans for the Tartarian Technocracy's Type-06 Intersection Drive engine in 2189. This new drive solved the problem that the shipwrights were having with bringing the George Washington class to a warp time-dilation of 1.0 light years per hour. The original configuration called for four Type-04 intersection drives, but that time-dilation would be barely over 0.5 light-years per hour. Even the Type-06 intersection drives of the Tartarian Technocracy would only bring the ship's time-dilation to 0.76 light-years per hour with two engines. The design team did consider using four engines, but decided against it due to weight and power consumption considerations. By 2193, and the Ross 47 conflict, all George Mason class ships had been upgraded to George Washington class. Only one of these ships was lost during the 2nd Interplanetary War.
