Overview of the LaGrange Republics

          LaGrange was one of the most influential stellar nations within the Terran star systems throughout the late 21st Century and into the early and mid 22nd. Started in the year 2135 AD, the LaGrange Republics originally consisted of twenty large cylindrical space stations which acted as colony worlds and were classified as O'Neill type space islands.
         It was an ambitious and practical venture for the international financies who funded the project at the time these structures were built, due to the Balkanized nations on Earth edging ever closer to total annhilation during the 4th World War. The founders of the LaGrange Project intended to create a sanctuary in space near Earth for the rich, powerful, and elites that wanted no part of the conflict. As with all prolonged wars, they were in free-fall collapse due to out of control individualism, greed, and the ambition that resulted in such blatant and wanton secularism. The LaGrange Republics were a response to this society of debauchery and licentiousness. The colonists for the then new and somewhat dangerous project were all volunteers. Being mostly from the European continent, specifically the old Earth nations of Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and other nations that border the Mediterranean sea.
         The government of LaGrange was diverse among the twenty colonies at first, however, during the early 2140s a group of Gaullists unified the colonies under one banner. Technically the LaGrange Republics were created at the start of the space island project in 2135 AD and thus this stellar nation claims that Earth date as their foundational point in time though the actual political body formed by the Gaullists didn't form until 2142. Originally a political system credited to the French General Charles de Gaulle that was created during the 2nd Worldwide War on Earth, the new LaGrange Republics version of Gaullism was one that was far more socially conservative and economically socialist
         The revival of Marxism in 2148 throughout the ranks of the 2nd United Nations council was a direct result of the aftermath of the Cyber State Society and what was deemed the corruption of man by Capitalist cyberization. This revival accelerated a mass exodus from Earth to the L4 and L5 colonies of LaGrange by European and Asian capitalists who sought to escape the poverty and hardship they knew would come from worldwide Marxian-Socialism. The LaGrange Republics--being friendly towards capitalism/corporatism--embraced and welcomed many of these wealthy bankers, lawyers, and aristocrats who were fleeing the Earth.
         The worldwide turmoil of 2149 caused LaGrange to begin rethinking it's antiquated fleet of space exploration and commercial spacecraft. Both the UN and the newly formed United States of North America were obliterating each other on the surface of the Earth. It wouldn't be long before their war would span out into space, and the LaGrange Republics knew it. Therefore, by 2150 the LaGrange Space Forces were formed and a massive refit program begun for their existing fleet of non-combat space ships. A project that was opposed by the newly formed Eudaemonist political party within the L5 O'Neill space islands, but the Gaullist majority in L4 overrode their protests, making the argument that with twenty giant O'Neill space islands and hundreds of smaller space stations throughout the L4 and L5 LaGrange regions, they had to ensure the security and safety of their peoples. While this argument won the Gaullists their new military space fleet, it also backfired on them when the Eudaemonists won popular opinion to their side by stating that the new fleet would be to maintain the LaGrange Republics' neutrality in what was now being dubbed the Great War of the 21st Century or just The Great War.
          The L1 and L2 regions of the Earth-Moon sphere were battlezones by 2152 and hotly contested by both the UN and United States Space Navy due to their strategic use in the fight for control of Luna. L2 was under UN control (mostly) and L1 under USSN control, while Luna was a battleground with both sides having bases and ground forces there. A plethora of small VonBraun Mark-VII wheel space stations, Bernal Spheres, and partially constructed O'Neill space islands were in these regions near Earth. The destruction of the UN controlled Bernal Sphere--Midway Station--in the L1 region by the USSN escalated the call for LaGrange Space Forces intervention to end the hostilities. A myriad of diplomatic meetings were held, but all collapsed as neither the 2nd UN nor the United States of North America were willing to keep space a non-combat zone.
         By 2153 the space stations within the L1 and L2 regions were now either changing hands with each military conquest by the two main antagonists or being destroyed outright. LaGrange had attempted to isolate the L1 through L3 regions as neutral zones, but only L3 was allowed to be such an area of space in the Earth-Moon Sphere because it was always opposite Luna on the far side of Earth and all but useless militarily speaking. The LaGrange Republics took control of L3 in 2154 as part of their Operation Cease Fire within the Earth-Moon sphere. The five O'Neill cylinders in L3 were nearly complete having been started in 2144, and LaGrange wanted to protect them from destruction as all of the O'Neill cylinders within L1 and L2 had been destroyed or rendered useless. Fortunately for the LaGrange Republics, the UN had already began the move to Mars, Venus and the asteroid belt and were only attempting to wrest control of Luna from the USSN.
          The neutrality of the LaGrange Republics remained in effect (officially) until 2156 when the asteroid Eros hit the Earth. The 2nd UN council (now the Solar Empire) maintained that they had nothing to do with the impact and that if UN Space Corps personnel were involved, it was simply a relocation accident. The USSN declared the act "the worst Terrorist Attack in human history," the truth of the matter was completely different and LaGrange totally unaware of it. Nevertheless, LaGrange sided with the United States Space Navy--that now had no home to return to as the surface of the Earth was decimated--and they forced the UN out of the L1 region of space and declared the Great War to be over. L3 was handed over to the USSN with the understanding that it would be for their people only and no weapons or military installations would be tolerated there and all UN military forces on Luna were to be removed. Although it should be noted that Admiral Pierre LaForte of the LaGrange Space Forces did assist the USSN in taking over the planetoid Juno in 2153 when his fleet was "neutral", and that the Gaullists were well aware of the fact that Juno was the main USSN base for their Military Industrial Complex when they imposed the restrictions on the use of the L3 colonies.
          In 2158 the 2nd UN (now the Solar Empire), launched an attack on Juno to finish off the fleet of USSN Kentucky class shuttles. The Gaullist and Eudaemonists were outraged, and demanded that the UNSC cease and desist. The failure of the Solar Empire to comply caused LaGrange to engage in what it termed a "Peace Keeping" action. This declaration was more of an insult to the Solar Empire than an actual policy decision. While war was not officially declared, the LaGrange fleet did engage the UNSC fleet within the Earth-Moon sphere on several occasions while the USSN rebuilt its warmachine.
          Realizing that the only way to achieve peace in the Earth-Moon sphere was to oust the Solar Empire, the LaGrange Forces turned a blind eye to the USSN attack on Luna in 2162. With LaGrange ships blocking any attempt by the UNSC to send aid to their bases on Earth's moon, the USSN conquered Luna. By the end of the year, Juno was moved into L2 as a vanguard for the Earth-Moon sphere and an alliance between the USSN and LaGrange was officially struck. Within a short time the old LaGrange Space Fleet was replaced by USSN warships of the Kentucky, Type-59, Juno, Ogre, and Saturn classes.
          Continued attempts by the Solar Empire to retake Luna infuriated the Gaullists and set the Eudaemonists on edge within the LaGrange Republic government. It was decided that a secret war would be initiated against the Solar Empire in order to ensure the security of the Earth-Moon sphere. However, unexpected events changed the course of this policy and elements between the militaries of the USSN, LaGrange, and the UNSC (without Solar Empire knowledge) forged a secret alliance due to these unforeseen revelations within the asteroid field between Mars and Jupiter.
          An atmosphere of space piracy and harassment hung over the Solar Empire due to the support of the LaGrange Republics of these activities. LaGrange itself fully integrated the USSN into it, and the LaGrange Space Forces essentially became the USSN in 2166. The Gaullists now had allies in the new Federal-Republican party of L3 which gained full governmental status in 2166 after the Solar Empire launched "Operation Alpha Centauri." The need for military strength against the Solar Empire was the driving force behind this merger of governments and the slow fading of the LaGrange Republics government. It's system was created in a time of peace, and war with the Solar Empire seemed just on the horizon. The last proverbial nail in the coffin of the old LaGrange Republics government was the discovery of the survivors on Earth and the rise of the Earth Federal Republic. LaGrange had no choice but to join the EFR in 2168 after the arrival of the alien ship that crashed in the Ross Sea. Part of this political move was engineered by the conspirators behind the scenes, however, another part was the very real possibility of the Solar Empire having use of the Prodono warships.
          Such a fleet would have allowed the Solar Empire to overrun and crush the LaGrange Space Forces (essentially the USSN) and take over or destroy their colony space islands. That fact is what caused the LaGrange Republics to dissolve and hand over control of their space islands to the Earth Federal Republic. With the L3, L4, and L5 colonies at their back, the EFR was able to supply its military with the much needed food, fuel, and mineral resources. The merger with the EFR was not the total end of the LaGrange Republics however, from these governments came a new advisory group intended to help set policy, and move the EFR in the direction that the aristocrats of the old Republics wished. This new group of wealthy industrialists, financiers, and entrepreneurs was known as the Council on Stellar Relations.
