Overview of the Earth Federal Republic
This government was formed in 2158 AD by the survivors of the asteroid impact that destroyed much of the Earth in 2156 AD. This government was based on the laws of the old United States of America Federal Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the British Common Law. This planetary nation remained in power throughout the Interplanetary Era and was the main political influence in the Planetary Alliance that came later. The EFR was the main enemy of the United Nations Solar Empire throughout the 1st Interplanetary War.
The EFR government and culture began as a limited free republic in 2158 AD, but changed into a corporatist-controlled democracy by the year 2175 AD as large corporations began taking control of the government through donations to politicians and by buying out the media companies. Many abuses of power and all manner of corruption plagued the EFR during and after the 2170s. The government became increasingly oppressive with laws that forced the population into becoming little more than corporate slaves. Voting within the corporate-controlled state became a popularity contest of corporate-sponsored candidates. Corporations gained greater power and privileges by the EFR government until ultimately a corporatist elite formed.
This elite group gained complete control over the EFR during the 2180s and 90s, through Templar style banking practices (fractional-banking) and vast armies of solicitors and barristers (lawyers).
The Earth Federal Forces, or EFF, embodied the Armed Forces of the Earth Federal Republic. This organization originally consisted of the Earth Federal Space Navy or EFSN, Earth Federal Space Marines or EFSM, and Earth Federal Justice Authority.
The EFSN formed out of the old United States Space Navy and performed essentially the same functions. The EFSN was the main offensive force of the EFR, and was responsible for the policing of the travel routes within EFR space. The EFSN consisted of the primary SpaceNavy, Customs Authority, Federal Marshals, and Federal Intelligence Agency. The Earth Federal Space Navy was the major military power in the Sol star-system during much of the 1st Interplanetary
War. The Earth Federal Space Navy acted as the backbone of the Planetary Alliance Space Navy during the first few years after the Ceres Conflict. The Earth Federal Space Navy was absorbed into the Planetary Alliance Space Navy after the 3rd Interplanetary War ended in 2194 AD, and acted solely as a defensive
force for the inner sphere of the Sol star-system.
The Customs Authority was responsible for the security of the EFR spacestations and starports. This agency monitored the import and export of goods within the Earth’s planetary sphere.
The Federal Marshals were essentially the space police forces of the EFR, whose primary mission was enforcing the numerous laws of the Federal Republic. The Federal Marshals were a quasi-military organization that enforced various laws of the EFR, from environmental violations to weapon control laws. As the EFR changed during the 2170s, the Federal Marshals changed with it and by the 2180s, the general
population viewed them as “storm troopers."
Just prior to the start of the 1st Interplanetary War, a new agency was added to the EFF. This agency was the Federal Intelligence Agency. The FIA formed in 2168 AD with the supposed purpose of protecting the EFR from enemy spies and terrorists. The FIA gained the authority to spy on the citizens of the EFR in 2182, and became the most feared EFR agency. The FIA was functionally similar to the old Soviet KGB.
The Earth Federal Space Marines formed just prior to the first major attack by the EFF against the UNSC base on Ceres in the 1st Interplanetary War. The EFSM mission was the same as that of the planetary marine forces before the interplanetary era. The mission of the EFSM changed after the 1st Interplanetary War when it was reorganized into three tiers. These tiers consisted of the Space Marines, Space Patrol Force, and Orbital Guard. The Space Marine tier continued the standard missions of the EFSM. The Space Patrol Force consisted of spacefighters, mecha, and combat shuttles used to patrol the Earth’s Planetary sphere and the travel routes between Earth, Mars, Venus, and all planetoids in between. The mission of the Patrol Force was anti-piracy and anti-smuggling enforcement. The Orbital Guard’s mission was to act as the ast line of defense of the EFR and was essentially the reserve SpaceNavy. The Orbital Guard fleet consisted of mostly
older ex-SpaceNavy warships, and paramilitary orbital-cutters.
The Earth Federal Justice Authority consisted of the Interplanetary Revenue Bureau, the Department of Contraband, and the Central Banking Service. This group of Federal agencies expanded into numerous “alphabet soup” agencies from 2180 until 2235 AD as the EFR corporate-autocratic elite continued to claim more and more control over their people.
The EFR political “death grip” on the inner sphere was weakened in 2198 AD when the Colonial Confederacy joined the Planetary Alliance. The gold-based laissez-faire economy of the CC was far too strong for the fiat (debt-based) monetary economy of the EFR. Were it not for the credit generated by the 2nd Interplanetary War, the weight of the debt of the EFR would have economically crushed it.
Ultimately, the corporatist laws that began in 2178 AD and the imperialist/fascist ideals of the corporate-elite caused the demise of the EFR in 2235 AD.
