Description/Overview:
Born in the midst of the Battle of Ceres in 2071, this variant of the MBR-01 was the creation of Sgt. Kabuto Tokugawa of Sledgehammer platoon. Tokugawa had made a makeshift gunpod out of the remains of a UN Type-55 hovertank that his team felled during the invasion of the UN-controlled planetoid. The modified MBR-01 proved to be very effective against UN armor of the early years of the 1st Interplanetary War. However, the recoil of the Lithgear 240-millimeter autocannon was too severe for the shoulder and elbow joints of the original MBR-01 unit (the right arm and shoulder joints of Tokugawa’s machine were torn up beyond repair). Therefore, once the Battle of Ceres was over, Tokugawa’s MBR-01 was shipped off to the MacDonald-Doogrim R&D facility at Juno for further development.
The researchers at Juno determined that the idea of mounting high-powered cannon to a machine designed for only low- to medium-caliber weaponry was not only possible, but also very desirable. The design team working on the modified MBR-01 submitted a request for funding for the project, which was granted in mid-2072 AD. During this time, the same team also began the MBR-01B project as a cheaper alternative to what had now been designated the MBR-01T, or Tokugawa Special, in honor of Sgt. Kabuto Tokugawa.          The MacDonald-Doogrim team realized that a pair of atmosphere type antigravity units could be mounted into heavily modified MBR-01 leg housings and adjusted to act as recoil compensators for the unit’s main weapon. Only one gravitational unit was needed, but two were installed in order to provide some form of backup should the first unit fail or be destroyed during combat.
As the project moved forward throughout 2072 AD, additional modifications were added to the prototype mecha. New armor (crystal composite), a more advanced fusion reactor, and more advanced electronics were installed on the machine as these components became available. However, the basic MBR-01 foundation remained relatively unchanged: the superstructure, fibro-carbon muscles, and weapons. After an entire year of modifications and tweaking, the first MBR-01Ts were rolled off the production lines and put into service in 2073 AD.
What made the MBR-01T stand out from its brother MBR-01 mecha was clearly the Lithgear/Militia Military Industries LG/MMI-AC240 240-millimeter autocannon gunpod and its heavy combat shield. This massive cannon was capable of blasting through tank and battlerobot armor with ease.
This cannon was identical to the main weapon used on the dreaded UN Type-55 Main Battle Hover Tanks. After the Earth Federal Forces took control of Ceres, numerous Type-55 weapons manufacturing facilities were captured. Thus, the MacDonald-Doogrim team at Juno had an ample supply of Lithgear LG-AC240 dies and machine tools with which to build a cannon factory. Initially, this factory was going to be built on Juno, but political tensions within the EFR caused the MacDonald-Doogrim team to move the autocannon factory to the EFSM spacestation known as NoWhere Station. Once the factory was moved there, the task of redesigning the tank cannon into a useable, arm-mounted gunpod for the MBR-01 was put into action by Militia Military Industries.
MMI began production of the weapon in moderate quantities as the Earth Federal Space Marines prepared to attack Venus and eventually move on to the Mars campaign. General Walsh’s military planners had deemed the MBR-01T to be an excellent sniper/artillery weapon for planetary assaults and viewed it as a valuable asset to mecha battalions. Whole Platoons of MBR-01T mecha were organized for the Venus and Mars campaigns. However, the military planners did not want the MBR-01T used as a frontline unit. It was considered too costly to mass-produce and was limited to MBR-01 refits only, so no MBR-01Ts were actually ever built from scratch.
A second mission of the MBR-01T was that of a command unit for MBR-01 series platoons within the EFSM and subsequently the Jovian Defense Forces. It is not known how many MBR-01 battlerobots were refit to the Tokugawa model. However, conservative estimates put the total number between 1000 and 1500 units by the end of the 1st Interplanetary War.
After the war was over, nearly all of the 3500 original configuration MBR-01 battlerobots in the ranks of the Jovian Defense Forces were converted to MBR-01T models and used for the ground defense forces of the Jovian moons of Europa, Io, and Ganymede.
