Description/Overview:
After the EFSM forces had finished “Operation Aphrodite” (the invasion of Venus in August of 2075), the EFSM created a new company, SkyKing-GrandJäger, to build a new, more heavily armed and armored version of the MBR-01B for the Mars campaign. Due to the large number of MBR-01Bs in the EFSM’s inventory, the decision was made to use the existing MBR-01B design and modify the weapon systems to meet the requirements set forth by the mission parameters of the invasion of Mars.
The MBR-01B1 was almost identical to the MacDonald-Doogrim MBR-01B “Bombard” model. Only the armor plating and some of the weaponry were different.
SkyKing’s MBR-01B1 did away with the Bophors AC-P105 planet type 105-millimeter autocannon and replaced it with an Apollo Research AR-105RC 105-millimeter rail cannon. This weapon became the main artillery piece used by the improved Bombard, and was identical to the weapon used on the MAT-48A3 and A4 models of mobile tanks. This weapon’s high rate of fire and ability to shoot in bursts made it the logical choice for the invasion of Mars as the EFSM intelligence indicated that the UN forces there relied heavily on hovertanks of the Type-55 variety and that a new assault MAT was put into service in 2075 AD.
The second new weapon system was one Norking SRM-03S (space type) missile launcher. This launcher was the same type used on the SBR-01 series of space battlerobots and was very plentiful in the EFSM armories. Missiles for this launcher were abundant, and the new MBR-01B1 needed a missile weapon capable of speeds that could intercept aerospace fighters of the UNSC forces.
The third weapon system was an Orlakon/MMI AC-R20 20-millimeter autocannon mounted in a ball turret in the torso of the mecha. This ball turret was intended for use against light vehicles and ground troops, although in combat, many pilots used it as a proximal weapon against other mecha units.
Like the MBR-01B before it, the SkyKing-GrandJäger MBR-01B1 was used in squadrons of 20 units. However, unlike the MBR-01B, the “B1” was never used to complement mixed mecha type platoons. Very few of the MBR-01B1 type of main battlerobots survived the 1st Interplanetary War. Those that made it to the end of the conflict wound up in the hands of the Jupiter Federal Colonies where they served as third-line defense units.
With the outbreak of hostilities within the inner sphere of the Sol System in 2083, the MBR-01B1 was called into service again, this time by the planetary militias of the Jupiter Defense Forces. Like the MBR-01B, the MBR-01B1 was purely a ground combat unit and all but useless in zero-g.
The MBR-01B1 began production in late 2076 AD and was produced by the EFSM until 2077 AD; production began again in 2080 AD by the Jupiter Federal Colonies. The JFC produced the MBR-01B1 for their ground forces up until the introduction of the MBR-01J (another variant of the MBR-01B) in 2083 AD. A total of 75,000 units were built. The first 23,500 were constructed by the EFSM, while the remaining 51,500 were built by the JFC during the early 2080s. Very few of the original EFSM produced MBR-01B1s survived the 1st Interplanetary War. The majority of MBR-01B1s used during the Ceres conflict and 2nd Interplanetary War were built by the Jupiter Federal Colonies.
