Description/Overview:
In 2038 AD, the UN member nations called for the creation of a small, fast (for its time) space shuttle capable of transporting goods and personnel from Earth to anywhere in the inner sphere of the Solar System. The European Union company Eurospace unveiled the UN SS-01 (United Nations Space Shuttle Type-1) in 2040 AD to fill this requirement. The SS-01 was used extensively by the UNSC from 2051 to 2054 AD as the main ship in their small space fleet, which at that time consisted of 365 ships.
However, the US SpaceNavy introduced the Kentucky class assault shuttle in 2052 AD The Kentucky was more than a match for the SS-01 and the UN found themselves somewhat helpless against the US forces. Therefore, in 2052 AD the UN introduced an improved version of the SS-01, the AS-01.
The Kentucky class ships were still able to go head-to-head with the AS-01s due to the Kentucky class weapons being greater in range then those of the AS-01, which lead to the creation of the AS-02 in 2053 AD.
The AS-02 was better armed and armored than the AS-01 and still retained the AS-01’s speed. The AS-02s were more expensive than the AS-01s, and were thus fewer in number by a margin of 2 to 1. This family of space shuttles remained in service with the UNSC and subsequent powers throughout the interplanetary era.
