Description/Overview:
The ST class of UN shuttle-transport ships was originally built by the United Nations Space Corps in 2152 AD to act as defense carriers for the cargo ships going to and from Earth, Luna, Mars, and the various planetoid bases. These craft were somewhat successful as space fighter transports and were quite agile in both space and in an atmosphere. The mission of the ST series did not change much with the introduction of the second model. The second class of ST ships was intended to be a very capable ship-to-ship combat craft even though the original type was not designed for this mission. This class of ships was therefore used in squadrons of six to twelve or more for mutual protection.
         (ST-52)
The Shuttle-Transport Model 52 was built out of need for a long-range, high-speed vessel capable of ferrying cargo shuttles over long distances between Earth, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter. Initially the UNSC intended the ST-52 class of ships as an attack carrier capable of transporting ten full squadrons of SF-01 space fighters into a battle, thus overwhelming the Kentucky class assault shuttles used by the USSN. However, the ST-52 class was immediately reassigned to guard and transport cargo shuttles due to the USSN changing tactics. The Kentucky class ships learned quickly to avoid the ST-52 squadrons when they were not protecting a cargo convoy or transporting cargo ships themselves. The ST-52 was a dominant force during the Great War. It helped stop the relentless onslaught of pirate raids by the USSN forces. However, after the war was over and the USSN abandoned privateering to adopt a space-borne campaign of defense of the Earth-Luna Sphere, new ships entered into service with the USSN: the Type-59 corvette, Juno class, and Saturn class space frigates. The new USSN fleet of ships were armed with multiple laser cannon turrets and space torpedo launchers with a focus on hunting down and destroying the ST-52 type defense carrier transports.
         (ST-68)
The second version of the UN shuttle-transport ship was built in order to provide the UNSC with a craft capable of dealing with the Juno. This version was simply an upgraded ST-52. However, nearly every one of the ST-52 type transports had been destroyed by the USSN during the Battle of Luna in 2165, and therefore most of the ST-68s were completely new ships.
The new ST-68s were fitted with antigravity systems modeled after the Tesla-Shauberger type units recovered from captured USSN and Lagrange type frigates instead of the UN-designed electromagnetic gravitational system common on the large spacecraft of the UNSC. The addition of this new system to the shuttle-transport allowed the craft to travel at far greater speeds than the ST-52. The ship still had to maintain speeds at or below MACH 30 while transporting ships that lacked an antigravity system, but when used as a combat fighter carrier platform, the ST-68 could engage all five engines for maximum speed without the fear of injury to her crew.
