Overview of the Earth Federal Space Marines

         General George Walsh formed the Earth Federal Space Marines in 2168 AD in preparation for "Operation Counterstrike”. This operation was the first USSN/EFR joint mission prior to the finalization of the USSN becoming the Earth Federal Space Navy. "Operation Counterstrike" used USSN Ogre class troopships, EFSM MAT-48A3s, and USMC-EA-45s in a complete rout of the UNSC forces on Earth, Luna, and the 500,000-mile sphere of space around Earth.
         This operation was a complete success and helped expedite the assimilation of the USSN into the Earth Federal Forces. It also proved that the Earth Federal Space Marines were a worthwhile organization, and thus the Federal Senate began funding them and supplying them with their own budget and autonomous command structure.
         The first act of faith in the new EFR organization by the Federalist-controlled senate was the election of General George Walsh to the position of commander-in-chief of the Earth Federal Forces, and thus the placing of the Posse Comitatus under EFSM control.
          This act of faith did not sit well with the commanders of the Earth Federal Space Navy, as nearly all of the EFSM command was from the EFR and almost all of the EFSN top brass were from the USSN. This act by the senate was the first in a long line of schisms that eventually drove the EFSN and EFSM apart. The second major wedge between the two forces occurred in 2171 AD, just after the EFSM assault on the planetoid Ceres, when General Walsh placed the EFSN under the complete control of the spacemarines. This action forced the old USSN admiralty into a position of rallying behind Commodore Karl Webb. Webb was the commander of the EFSN and former fleet admiral of the USSN, who was against General Walsh's policy of placing the spacemarines over the SpaceNavy, but in support of the endeavor to separate the Earth Federal Space Navy from the EFSM.
         General Walsh attempted to placate the EFSN commanders by separating the Earth Federal Forces into two distinct spacenavies in 2172 AD after the implementation of "Operation Daedalus”. This separation allowed the EFSN to command a small number of troopships and their pickets while allotting cruisers, destroyers, and destroyer-escorts to Walsh's spacemarine fleet. These two spacenavies were dubbed 1st SpaceNavy and 2nd SpaceNavy. 1st SpaceNavy was under General Walsh's control, while 2nd SpaceNavy came under Commodore Webb's command.
          Similar to the sentiments of the former USSN commander, General Walsh was pushing the Federalist senate to allow the spacemarines to become an entirely separate entity from the SpaceNavy. The "hand-me-down" spacecraft the EFSM forces were using did not suit Walsh's ideal of what the EFSM could be. The old Ogre and Kentucky Mark-II spacecraft were adequate at the start of the 1st Interplanetary War, but after the Solar Empire introduced their Ironclad warships, the old USSN ships were simply not up to the task. "Operation Athena" confirmed Walsh's worst fears about the 2nd SpaceNavy when it was executed in July of 2172 AD. Unfortunately for General Walsh, the Eudaemonists took control of the senate in 2172 AD just prior to "Operation Athena" and thus no appropriations for new weapons or warships were forthcoming.
         Nevertheless, General Walsh went about commandeering the resources and material he needed from Juno and the other planetoid bases that were under his direct control to repair his current fleet of 1st SpaceNavy vessels and build an entirely new 3rd SpaceNavy that he intended to use to secede from the EFSN and eventually the EFR.
         The EFSM completed 3rd SpaceNavy in 2174, and with it General Walsh's spacemarines gained autonomy from the Earth Federal Space Navy. Walsh and his commanders used fighting ships of 3rd SpaceNavy as the tip of the spear for the transports and troopships of 1st SpaceNavy as he launched "Operation Aphrodite" in 2175 AD and invaded Venus.
         General Walsh's success at Venus allowed him to woo many of the USSN captains under his command over to his side as he prepared to assault Mars. With this cadre of converts, the EFSM was able to successfully isolate and invade Mars through "Operation Face" and "Operation Red Storm" in late 2176. With the assault on Mars in full swing, the EFSM met and forged a truce with the Union of Solar Republics. Their combined forces attacked the Solar Empire, and by the end of 2176, they had crushed the UN socialist state.
         This truce was to allow the USR and EFSM to maintain control of Mars, Venus and most of the planetoids in the inner sphere as well as take control of the ex-UNSC Jupiter, Vesta, and Hygiea colonies. The results of the EFR presidential election of 2176 forced the EFSM to change its plans and focus on the Jovian worlds of Jupiter and Saturn as well as try to maintain control of Mars, Vesta, and Hygiea. Thus, the secession of the EFSM from the EFR began.
         The end of the first EFSM started in January of 2177 and ended with the Battle of Vesta in March of 2177 AD. Although the original EFSM ended, this great and honorable organization gave birth to the Jovian Defense Forces (Jupiter Defense Force/Saturn Defense Force) which carried the torch of the ideals and principles of the first EFSM.
          Another Earth Federal Forces organization called the EFSM was formed after the 1st Interplanetary War was over, but this new organization was little more than the ground forces of the Earth Federal Space Navy and never lived up to the high standards of the original organization.
