Description/Overview:
The JgWM-03 Jäger-WeirMech Mark-II was the upgrade to the highly successful Mark-I that outperformed expectations during the last years of the 1st Interplanetary War. Unlike the Panzer Mark-I the Jäger was compact, heavily armed (for a machine of its size) and very maneuverable. It also only used one pilot instead of two, making the machine more ergonomic. The Mark-II built upon the success of the Mark-I via an upgrade of the first machine’s best features.
This Mark-II Jäger took advantage of its “light” displacement allowing its use in smaller vessels with internal volume constraints. Just like its predecessor, the Mark-I, the JgWm-03 was used by a wide variety of Ceres warships for the full range of missions that the Grand Duchy could use it.
The JagerWeirmech Mark-II was still intended to act as a planetary Blitzkrieg machine just like the Mark-I. Therefore, it was fitted with whole new “engine pack” that made it considerably faster than the JgWm-02. This “engine pack” consisted of six Vokker Mezzerschmidt TNRE-1K Thermo-Nuclear Rocket Engines fitted in a “star-of-David” pattern on the back of the mecha. Each of these thermo-nuclear rockets was able to propel the machine at up to 1000 mph. The vectoring nozzels of the pack allowed the Mark-II to boost up, down, left, or right at up to 2000 mph. This gave the machine excellent maneuvering capability in space and in an atmosphere. All six engines combined could propel the vehicle at 6000 mph for up to 1 hour in an atmosphere, while in space short bursts of 6000 mph could provide indefinite travel at that speed and hours of movement via 10 second bursts.
The old Hygiea Factory #12 WE-02 walker engine used on the Jäger Mark-I, was also used on the Mark-II. This engine gave the JagerWeirMech a speed of 60 mph; three times faster than the PzWM-01. However, this speed was still twenty miles per hour slower than the MBR-01.
The greatest drawback of the original JagerWeirMech was its lack of medium or long range weaponry. All of its weapons were considered short range by the standards of the 1st Interplanetary War. This flaw in the original Mark-I design was solved in the new Mark-II with the introduction of the Mawzer PG-PS-5/30 gunpod. This gunpod was based on the Prodono distruptor-lance concept and combined both a proximal weapon with a medium range beam cannon. The PHELAC beam portion of the gunpod was useable in the “wand” position of the foldable unit, while the plasma sword was only useable when the graviton-field frame swung out and over the PHELAC beam emitter nozzel providing energy to the “plasma-blade”. This hinged mechanism was delicate–even with armored plating–and prone to malfunction with even minor damage to the gunpod causing it to be stuck in whichever mode it is in at the time. This was the PG-PS-5/30s greatest drawback and part of the reason the Grand Duchy design team was desperately trying to convince Grand Duke Dalltan of the need to replace the Jager’s gunpod with a combination of standard beam-rifle/rail-cannon gunpod and a separate proximal weapon (they suggested a plasma-ax similar to the types used by BattleKnights).
In addition to the gunpod, the Mark-II retained the main armament of the Mark-I, that being the pair of Mawzer MRC-401 forty-millimeter rail cannons mounted in the “palms” of the JgWm-02’s hands. In the Mark-II, these “palm-guns” were relocated to the cannon mounts originally used by the MRC-208 eight-barrel rail cannons. Even during the 2180s, these rail cannons were excellent against the MBR-01 series, even the HBR-01 types, and formidable against all types of mecha except for the Protean fighters of the Saturn nation.
The Mark-II also retained the secondary weapon of the JgWM-02. That weapon being its pair of Watzler SRML-165 sixteen-shot short range missile launchers. These shoulder mounted missile racks fired the standard CSRM-005 short range television guided missile was 5lb warhead. A variety of warheads were available for these missiles, from fragmentation to nuclear, but the standard payload was normally High Explosive Armor Piercing (HEAP). Each of these launchers only held 16 missiles giving the JagerWeirMech a total payload of 32 CSRM-005 missiles.
The final weapon system of the JagerWeirMech JgWm-03 Mark-II was its pair of Mawzer MAC-25 autocannon rail cannon twenty-five millimeter rail cannons. This pair of cannons was considered to be more of an anti-missile weapon than a proximal weapon for use at close range. However, the MAC-25s were something of a failure as an anti-missile application and all but useless as a proximal weapon.
In addition to its armor, the Mark-II used a Volk-Wolf Deflector Field Generator deflector field generator which generated a 20-foot diameter “shield” over the left arm of the mecha and was useable in the same manner as a standard “solid” shield used by other mecha of the era. This deflector field consumed far more energy than its protection warranted and was not particularly effective against most weapons used by mecha of the 2180s.
The Mark-I JagerWeirMech orignally used hydraulic muscles for articulation and limb movement, however, the Mark-II used Fibro-Carbion Muscles after Ceres acquired the design for this system from both the Prodono battlesuits and EFR MBR-01s.
The JagerWeirMech Mark-II used a sensor head unit and advanced omni-directional thruster system akin to the types used on the alien battlesuits found at Alpha-Centauri. These two systems made the Mark-II quite adept and maneuverable for a human made machine both in space and on a planet.
The JagerWeirMech Mark-II were all built off of existing Mark-Is left over from the 1st Interplanetary War. The horde of Mark-Is that existed in partially completed form were stored at Ceres during the reign of the Regency. After the rise of the Duchy to power in the early 2180s, the incomplete JgWM-02s was remanufactured into JgWM-03s at Ceres and Pallas from 2181 to 2183. Experts estimate the total number of JagerWeirMech Mark-IIs rebuilt from Mark-Is, as of 2183, were 22,000. The vast majority of these units were destroyed during the Battle of Mars in 2183 AD.
