Description/Overview:
         (HBR-01D DESTROYER)
When the EFSM went “rogue” and attacked Mars in 2076 against the wishes of the EFR government, General Walsh had to face the possibility that his spacemarines might be fighting Earth forces in the near future. It was for this reason that the heavy battlerobot series was born. The idea behind the first of the two heavy battlerobots was to modify an MBR-01B1 into a space battlerobot by combining features of the SBR-01S type space battlerobot with those of the Bombard II. The result was an extremely powerful design for its time. SkyKing-GrandJäger was the principle designer of the HBR-01D Destroyer model and was one of only two of the twelve companies contracted by the EFSM to develop the new battlerobot that was able to build a successful model.
When the first HBR-01D units were used, they were intermixed with SBR-01S and SBR-01R platoons during “Operation Face”. The HBR-01D’s close resemblance to the SBR type battlerobots gave their pilots a surprise attack advantage that paid off during the assault on Deimos and Phobos. The UN forces there had no clue as to the destructive firepower of the new EFSM weapon they faced.
Due to its increased displacement weight, the HBR-01D had to use all new engines.
The walker engine of the battlerobot was one DængJäger RWE-06 walker engine capable of moving the battlerobot at speeds of 80 mph at a full run. This engine’s speed gave the HBR-01D an advantage on a planetary surface where gravity was a factor.
The main space propulsion systems were six Stellar-Dynamics TNRE-06 thermonuclear rocket engines arranged in a similar configuration to that of the SBR-01S and SBR-1R models of space battlerobots. The Stellar-Dynamics engines were able to propel the HBR at speeds of 3600 mph for up to 8.8 hours. This gave the HBR enough fuel to travel approximately 31,000 miles before refueling. Thus, the battlespace-combat radius of the battlerobot was about 16,000 miles, which is comparable to any SBR of its era. These engines also provided flight for the mecha within a planetary atmosphere at speeds of up to 450 mph and a maximum altitude of 3500 feet.
The weaponry of the HBR-01D was its true claim to fame. The HBR-01D Destroyer employed a wide variety of weapon systems for use in various environments and missions. The first of these weapons was a pair of standard three-shot MMI SRM-01-G (ground type) short-range missile launchers. Nearly every ground attack robot since the original MBR-01 used these effective missile pods. These SRMs were used against tanks, armored vehicles, and MATs.
The next weapon system was the MMI RFL-1.5LC rapid-fire laser cannon built by Militia Military Industries. Initially, SkyKing-GrandJäger had planned on using the Orlakon/MMI AC-R20 20-millimeter autocannon as a proximal weapon, but that system had proven to be inadequate due to its low ammunition stores, and space in the HBR-01D was tight. Therefore, an energy weapon system was chosen. The ball turret-mounted MMI RFL-1.5LC proved to be very effective against light vehicles and personnel, but only marginally effective as an anti-missile weapon system due to its low rate of fire.
The HBR-01D was also fitted with an anti-warship cannon, a Pallas Arms PA-PLC-20 20-megawatt PHELAC cannon mounted on the right shoulder of the mecha. This energy cannon was tied directly into the mecha’s fusion reactor. The PHELAC cannon of the HBR-01D provided the battlerobot with a hard-hitting “punch” in a single blast. This allowed the pilot of the mecha to pinpoint vital areas on an enemy ship, like the bridge for example, and inflict devastating damage to it, thus impairing the performance of an enemy warship. If used against small craft, like assault shuttles, the HBR-01D’s PHELAC weapon was lethal.
The main weapon of the HBR-01D was the Norking RCR-35 35-millimeter rail cannon rifle gunpod. This weapon was a handheld type used by the mecha for virtually any application. Short bursts from the rail cannon rifle were normally used on other mecha such as battlerobots, spacefighters, and tanks while long bursts from this gunpod were generally useful against hardened bunkers, space warships, and fortifications.
The last weapon in the HBR-01D arsenal was the Warptron WPA-4 Plasma Axe. This devastatingly powerful combat system was a proximal weapon useful against any type of armor or spacecraft, including capital ships. The weapon was normally stored underneath the battlerobot’s combat shield to protect it when not in use. However, when the weapon was “unsheathed”, it came to life with fiery plasma capable of melting through most battlerobot armor of the 1st Interplanetary War era. A formidable weapon to say the least, it was one of only two proximal weapon systems developed during the 1st Interplanetary War era. The second was the plasma mace used on the HBR-01K.
The HBR-01D was a unique battlerobot during its time, in that instead of using vector control thrusters to maneuver in space, it used a modified anti-gravity system and dedicated computer. This combination allowed the anti-gravity system to use minute amounts of graviton particles to “push” the vehicle in the desired direction. The inertia from the graviton particles being released in any one direction forced the mecha to move in the opposite direction quickly. This made the HBR-01D very maneuverable in space. In a planetary environment however, the inertia system was all but useless, and the pilot had to rely on the vehicle’s normal maneuvering systems.
The HBR-01D used a medium combat shield as its only defense system. This shield was capable of absorbing considerable damage before being rendered useless or destroyed.
The EFSM constructed only 7500 HBR-01Ds during the 1st Interplanetary War period. These units were assigned to the 375 special operations units of the spacemarines (these included Special Forces, search and rescue, base and spacestation defense units, and heavy assault platoons). Only a handful of these 7500 HBR-01Ds survived into the 2080s, and all of those were in the hands of the newly formed Neo-Hebrews of Saturn. It was the Neo-Hebrews who resurrected the HBR designs and mass-produced them for their defense forces on Titan and the other moons of Saturn. The Hebrews as of 2083 AD made a total of 75,000 units. These units remained in service up until the end of the 2nd and 3rd Interplanetary Wars of the 2091-2102 and 2108-2110 periods respectively.
         (HBR-01K KABUTO)
The HBR-01K “Kabuto” model of heavy battlerobot was built off the second design submitted to the EFSM in 2076 AD. A new company founded on Pallas called StarDragoon-Maxinger made that design. This newly founded manufacturer had built a mecha that was nearly identical to the SkyKing-GrandJäger design. This was no accident as members of their design team were the ones who founded the new company after a falling-out between some of the developers and the machine fabrication team. The StarDragoon-Maxinger design had initially been beaten by the SkyKing-GrandJäger design due the cost of their HBR. However, General Walsh, at the behest of Major Kabuto Tokugawa of the 7th Special Forces Mechanized Unit, lobbied for the StarDragoon-Maxinger model due to its increased firepower and usefulness as a “command mecha”. Major Kabuto Tokugawa’s persistent efforts garnered StarDragoon-Maxinger their contract to build the machine. In honor of his efforts, the design team at StarDragoon-Maxinger named the battlerobot after him.
The HBR-01K was essentially the same battlerobot as the HBR-01D except for its sensors and weapons. The StarDragoon-Maxinger team had emphasized the use of slug-throwing weapons over energy weapons for the fixed mounts on the battlerobot due to the possibility of the UN forces using alien mecha from Alpha Centauri. It was thought that the UN has specimens of alien mecha types similar to those that were recovered from the Posse Comitatus after the EFR had salvaged it from the Ross Sea where it crashed. The alien A.G.A.R.-01 (Armored Ground Assault Robot type one) and B.S.-01 (Battlesuit type one) both used energy-resistant armor plating. This meant that if the EFSM forces encountered alien units, piloted by UN personnel, on Mars they could find themselves at a great disadvantage.
The HBR-01K used three MMI SRM-01-G (ground type) short-range missile launchers instead of only two. The addition of this third launcher was to increase the anti-tank capabilities of the battlerobot without the need for a more expensive weapon system. The SRM-01G was plentiful as was the missiles for it.
The MMI RFL-1.5LC remained unchanged and was used in exactly the same manner as on the HBR-01D model.
The primary weapon of the HBR-01K was the Pallas Arms RC-35-6 six-barrel Gatling rail cannon. This weapon system was an extension of the Norking RCR-35 35-millimeter rail cannon rifle gunpod used by the HBR-01D. The RC-35-6 had a much higher rate of fire than the gunpod weapon. However, the six-barrel weapon suffered from a limited field of fire, though any mecha caught within its kill-zone was almost certain to be heavily damaged or destroyed. This weapon’s high rate of fire required the use of an external ammo drum. This drum held 6000 rounds of 35-millimeter rail cannon ammunition giving the weapon the ability to fire up to one hundred of the sixty round bursts. One such burst could riddle a UN Type-55 heavy tank into metallic confetti.
The next of the HBR-01K’s primary weapons was the SkyKing-GrandJäger SG-EMPAC-28 electromagnetic particle accelerator cannon gunpod. This gunpod was designed for use against UN capital ships and assault MATs. It was a deadly weapon system capable of very high rates of fire for an EMPAC weapon. This rate of fire was due to the weapon’s use of a clutch-enhanced nuclear battery which was actually a drum-shaped e-clip located on the top of the gunpod. In theory, if the energy-clip was depleted, the HBR-01K pilot could “reload” the gunpod with a fresh one. However, that feature was never used on the HBR-01K due to the high cost of the nuclear battery. It was simply too expensive to discard during combat. Many SG-EMPAC-28s had their “ejection” systems disabled prior to the mecha’s launch in order to prevent pilot’s from jettisoning a nuclear battery to use a new one once theirs was depleted (not that a spare was even loaded onto the mecha).
The HBR-01K’s final weapon was its proximal one, the WPM-2 Warptron Plasma Mace. This plasma weapon was slightly more powerful then Warptron’s plasma axe used on the HBR-01D and half the weight of the axe. Like the plasma axe, the plasma mace was a devastatingly powerful weapon that could smash most UN mecha with a single hit and inflict heavy damage to space warships. The mace was stored on either hip of the HBR-01K via its U-shaped magnetic plate; once energized, this plate would hold the mace in place as if it were welded to the mecha.
Like the HBR-01D, the HBR-01K used a medium combat shield mounted on its left shoulder as its only defensive weapon.
The HBR-01K used the same antigravity inertia maneuvering system as the HBR-01D, and thus had the same performance in space as its sister battlerobot. The HBR-01K suffered from the same speed and altitude restrictions as the HBR-01D due to its non-aerodynamic design.
The EFSM constructed 375 HBR-01K battlerobots for the commanders of their Special Operations units. During the 1st Interplanetary War, there was normally only one HBR-01K for every twenty HBR-01Ds. At wars end, only sixty-three HBR-01Ks were left, all of which were in the hands of the EFSM forces on Saturn, which eventually became the Neo-Hebrews of Saturn. After the war, the Neo-Hebrews put the HBR-01K back into production and produced an additional 3750 units for their planetary defense forces. These mecha stayed in service up until the end of the 3rd Interplanetary War.
