Description/Overview:
The Alaska class interplanetary missile destroyer was the backbone of the EFSM fleet. These ships were built to contend with both the newly designed UNSC fleet of “Project Ironclad” ships and the Prodono warships of Zhukov’s fleet should the need have arisen. This class of ship was also intended to be able to engage in ship-to-ship combat with the more conventional fleet of the EFSN due to the political climate of the Earth Federal Republic at the time. The Alaska class was built along the same fundamental concepts as that of the Nevada class, which preceded them by only a few months. The Y-shaped flight deck of the Nevada type ships was incorporated into the Alaska class design along with the side-hull spacecraft elevators and hangar modules.
The Alaska class was fitted with a Macrotechnologies IPFE-1600 ion plasma fusion engine as its main propulsion system in the same fashion as the Nevada class. After Nevada's crash course shakedown procedure was over, the proverbial “green light” was given by the EFSM military brass to place an IPFE on the Alaska class. This engine propelled the ship at the same speed as that of the Nevada class (kiloMach 5 or 930 miles per second or .005C). Ultimately, this engine proved itself during the Venus and Mars campaigns of the 1st Interplanetary War, and led to the installation of IPFE engines on all subsequent EFSM and eventually Saturn Defense Force ships of the 21st century.
This class of ship was initially conceived as a “missile” version of the Nevada class, but as the design progressed so did its size and displacement. Because it was intended as a variant of the Nevada class, the Alaska class used the standard Earth type triple fusion engine array. Unfortunately for the EFSM, their resources were limited and the initial engine procurement order for the Alaska class of ships was for the Warptron FT-90 fusion thruster engines. These engines were the exact same type as used on the Nevada class. The mass of the Alaska was two and a half times larger than Nevada upon completion, thus the FT-90s had a greatly reduced combat speed compared to that of the Nevada class. To help compensate for this deficiency, an additional twenty spacefighters/battlerobots were added to the complement of the ship and an improved omni-gyroscopic maneuvering system was installed.
The armament of the Alaska class consisted of two types of weapon systems. The first was intended for use against the UNSC “Project Ironclad” warships and the spacecraft of the EFSN. These were three, dual-barrel, Lunar Dynamics LD-PC-600 600-megawatt PHELAC turrets. Each of these turrets was able to deliver a considerable blow to enemy escort and light capital ships. The second weapon system of the Alaska class was intended for use against planetary targets and spacestations. However, the eight-shot, Militia Military Industries ASML-810K anti-ship missile launcher found a more effective role as an anti-capital ship/fleet weapon system. The ASML-810K fired the Norking ASM-10K Advanced Cruiser Missile (ACM) with computer-guided 10,000-pound nuclear warhead. The ASM-10K was one of the first EFR missiles to use a warhead of this size combined with a fusion thruster propulsion system. The melee range of this missile was 1611 miles, but its maximum range was 50,160 miles after 7.2 minutes of flight, something the EFSM exploited considerably during the defense of Jupiter in 2078 AD. The blast of the nuclear warhead of this ACM was able to inflict massive damage to anything within its 38-mile area of effect.
The Alaska class of missile destroyers was among the first and one of the last warships to mount I-Field generators for defense, as this defensive system was replaced on future warship designs. The Alaska had four Warptron IF-1000 ion field generators mounted in strategic defense locations on the hull of the ship. Each generator was able to englobe the craft in its protective field giving the ship four levels of protection. This made the Alaska class destroyers tough nuts to crack for enemy units. However, during the EFSN’s “Operation Asteroid”, it quickly became clear to the EFSN forces that they could use the autocannons of their battlerobots to inflict serious damage to the Alaska type ships, as the I-Fields were useless against projectile weapons.
The Alaska class of missile destroyers were initially a part of the EFSM space forces before the Earth spacemarines seceded from the Earth Federal Republic during the 1st Interplanetary War period.
