Description/Overview:
The Kurita class of main space battleships was designed and developed by Militia Military Industries of the Lone-Star-Texas colony on the planetoid Juno. The Earth Federal Space Navy had contracted the Neo-Texan company to construct this new warship in response to the Solar Empire's Kiev class of space battleship and the EFSM Warspite class of battlecruiser. When word of the new design reached the ears of the Earth Federal Republic Senate, a joint development project with Lunar Dynamics on Earth's moon was begun. Within only one year of research, design, and development, the first Kurita class was launched from the main EFSN shipyards on Juno in 2178.
This class served with distinction during the end of the 1st Interplanetary War and was instrumental during the conflicts of the 2180s. However, the new class of battleship was very expensive and not as powerful or capable as military planners had hoped.
The Kurita class was born out of the need for a main space battleship with which the Earth Federal Republic could maintain control over its territories from the increasingly powerful Jupiter and Saturn Colonies, Ceres Regency, and the newly formed Union of Solar Republics. The power of the UNSC Ironclad warships was still fresh in the minds of many of the military planners within the Earth Federal Space Navy. The Kurita class was designed with firepower in mind.
The ship’s offensive capability centered on the Lunar Dynamics/Militia Military Industries EMPAC-20M 20,000-megawatt electromagnetic particle accelerator cannon mounted as a maw-gun at the front of the ship. This devastating weapon was able to penetrate most deflector fields and ship armor with a single blast.
The primary energy weapon systems of the Kurita class were five Federal Armory FA-PC-402 dual 400-megawatt PHELAC turrets. Used mostly in unison during “broadside” attacks, these cannons were capable of defeating most of the UNSC’s capital ship defense systems and armor plating on their warships, although these cannons were also used individually or in volleys against escorts and small capital ships.
The Kurita class was the first EFSN warship armed with anti-mecha defense turrets. There were five Republic Arms RFLC-502 dual 50-megawatt rapid-fire laser cannon turrets, three near the bridge and one on each side of the triple main engine pack on the bottom of the vessel.
The secondary anti-ship weapons of Kurita were twelve Republic Arms RA-STL-02A1 space torpedo launchers identical to the ones mounted on most of the EFSN warships of its era.
Four OTRAG-EMD-990M 990,000-megawatt Electromagnetic Drives made up the main propulsion systems of the Kurita class. One was located internally aft, and three were in a cluster on the bottom of the ship. The combined speed of these engines was kiloMach 80 (.09C). The main power plants were three Federal Energy FEFR-60M 60,000-megawatt fusion reactors.
The Kurita was equipped with six Warptron DF-5M 5000-megawatt deflector field generators. These defense shields were capable of
defending the ship against almost any attack from mecha or escort craft and were only vulnerable to attack from other battleship-scale weaponry.
