Description/Overview:
The second ship in the Arctic class family of warships was the Texas class. This class was simply a slightly enlarged and upgraded version of the older Arctic class. The Texas class shared the same basic mission of the older class and was the primary patrol and policing warship of the Sol star system (our solar system). The main difference between the two classes was in the engines, hull extensions, external fuel tanks, and power plants.
The Texas class used four plasma drives in place of the old fusion thrusters. The main plasma drive was one Arctic Motors PD-4000, 4000 MW, plasma drive capable of KiloMach 50 or .056C (5.6% light speed). This engine required two hull extensions (one ahead of and one behind the core-section). Like all ships of the EFR/USSN and LaGrange, the Arctic class was built with upgrades in mind so the hull was modular (with a forward, core, and aft module configuration). The two hull extensions for the new engine consisted of a buzzard-ram scoop section in front of the core-module and a fuel-housing section behind it. The secondary engines were three Lunar Dynamics PD-2000, 2000 MW, plasma drives capable of KiloMach 25 each or .023C each ( 2.3% the speed of light). The nacelles of these auxiliary engines each housed external fuel tanks that provided the necessary radioactive (liquid-Tritium) fuel for the plasma-drives. When combined, these engines were able to propel the ship at .125C or 12.5% the speed of light (KiloMach 125).
The Texas class required an enormous amount of power for a ship of its size (almost 15,000 MW) and was fitted with three Rockwell RFR-5000A, improved 5000 MW fusion reactors to feed its power hungry systems.
The armaments of the Texas class were three, single barrel, Federal Armory, FA-LC-200, 200 MW laser cannons. These turrets were used primarily as anti-space fighter and MECHA batteries. However, they could also be used against shuttles and other escort craft if needed.
The primary anti-ship weapons of the Texas class were six, RA-STL-02A space torpedo launchers built by Republic Arms. These torpedo launchers used both the SST-1M 1000 lb short range space torpedo and the MST-1M 1000 lb medium range space torpedo. Normally the ship was fitted with the type of space torpedo which best suited the needs of the mission. Standard payload was 10 MST-1M space torpedoes.
The defenses of the Texas class were six DF-100, 100 MW deflector field generators, built by Warptron. These defense systems were standard on ships of this size and were unremarkable.
The Texas class served in the Ceres conflict with distinction and most of these ships survived that war. This class was replaced by the Spartan class in 2193 A.D.
