Description/Overview:
The JgWM-02 JägerWeirMech was the brainchild of Doctor Xiang and a group of secret joint USSN/UN revolutionary task force members that were established in the early 2160s. The USSN team provided Dr. Xiang with detailed blueprints and technical readouts of the EFR MBR-01 main battler robot produced during the 2160s and some of the proposed upgrades that had been put forth for the MBR-01A model due to be produced in 2171 AD. The leaders of the conspiracy against the Solar Empire wanted a machine that could overcome this new mecha and allow Ceres to become the dominant force in the Sol System by the end of the 2170s. Thus, the JgWM-02 JägerWeirMech was developed.
This new machine was half the displacement of the PanzerWeirMech designed three years earlier in 2165 AD. The choice to reduce the size of the new robot was due to the internal volume constraints of many of the smaller warships that the rebel design team had come up with during their assessment of the then new USSN/EFR Juno class of space frigates. The Regency rebel leadership and their USSN conspirators assumed the Juno would be put into mass production as soon as the Earth Federal Republic could do so.
The JägerWeirMech was intended to act as a planetary Blitzkrieg machine, and therefore, it was fitted with a much faster walker engine than the PanzerWeirMech. One Hygiea Factory #12 WE-02 120-kilowatt walker engine was mounted on the machine. This new engine gave the JägerWeirMech a speed of 60 mph, which was three times faster than the PzWM-01. However, this speed was still twenty miles per hour slower than the MBR-01.
The JägerWeirMech was also fitted with a pair of Hygiea Factory #4 TNRE-2K thermonuclear rocket engines mounted on the back of the machine. Each of these engines was able to propel the vehicle at speeds of 2000 mph (4000 mph total) for up to two hours of continuous flight. This speed was considerably slower than the PanzerWeirMech-01, but still much faster than either the MBR-01 or the SBR-01 battle robots in use by the EFR during the late 2160s and early 2170s. However, the short flight time of the engines meant that the JägerWeirMech-02 had to deploy at close range in space, a task it was suited to perform as close-support defense for the Ceres space navy.
Perhaps the greatest drawback of the JägerWeirMech was its lack of medium- or long-range weaponry. All of its weapons were considered short-range by the standards of the 1st Interplanetary War. The main armament of the mecha was its pair of Mawzer MRC-401 40-millimeter rail cannons mounted in the “palms” of the machine’s hands. These “palm-guns” were quite deadly against targets such as the HSF-01 and MBR-01 type mecha and lethal to any UN tank or space fighter besides the Type-55, and formidable when used in unison against heavy battle robots like the EFR HBR-01 or UN Type-76 MAT.
The secondary weapon of the JgWM-02 was its pair of Watzler SRML-165 sixteen-shot short-range missile launchers. These shoulder-mounted missile racks fired the standard CSRM-005 short-range television-guided missile with 5-pound warhead. Varieties of warheads were available for these missiles, from fragmentation to nuclear, but the standard payload was normally High Explosive Armor Piercing (HEAP). Each of these launchers held only 16 missiles giving the JägerWeirMech a total payload of 32 CSRM-005 missiles, half the payload of the PanzerWeirMech-01.
The final weapon system of the JägerWeirMech-02 was its pair of Mawzer MRC-208 rail cannon eight-barrel 20-millimeter rail cannons. These two Gatling guns were considered both anti-missile and proximal weapons for use at close range. They were a failure at the anti-missile application and only marginally effective as proximal weapons. Many pilots of the JägerWeirMech chose to have these guns removed in favor of additional fuel tanks for their thermonuclear rocket engines or ammo drums for the Mawzer MRC-401 “palm-guns.”
The JägerWeirMech, like the PanzerWeirMech before it, used hydraulic muscles for articulation and limb movement due to the fact that USSN team was unable to secure the plans for the manufacture of fibro-carbon muscles from the EFR. The secret to the manufacture of this system was closely guarded and available only to a select few; the USSN conspirators were not among them.
The JägerWeirMech was the first large-scale battle robot to use a sensor head unit and advanced omnidirectional thruster system akin to the types used on the alien battle suits found at Alpha Centauri. These two systems made the JägerWeirMech quite adept and maneuverable for a human-made machine both in space and on a planet.
The JägerWeirMech was built in large numbers prior to the 1st Interplanetary War. This horde of machines was stored at the Second Object in the asteroid belt prior to the rise of the Ceres Regency as a power. Afterwards, the JgWM-02 was manufactured at Ceres and Pallas from 2178 to 2183. Experts estimate the total number of JägerWeirMechs built to be somewhere between 60,000 and 165,000 units as of 2180; the vast majority of these units were destroyed during the Battle of the Vesta Atlas gap in 2177 AD so exact numbers are unknown.
