Two current theories in science that have vast use for Science Fiction writers are Dark Matter and Dark Energy.
Their properties are only marginally understood and the theory on them is so new that the skies the limit until such time as physicists can quantify what they are and how they fit into our universe.
NASA has a nice write up on both of these currently mysterious elements of our universe.
Both are tantalizing material for Science Fiction writers.
