Small Arms & Equipment

The weapons of the United Nations Space Corps forces represented the culmination of years of firearms research and development in the area of electromagnetically accelerated projectiles, also known as rail guns; although, nearly all of the machine guns used by cyborg-soldiers of the UN forces were conventional caseless firearms. All of these weapons were used by the UNSC during the 1st Interplanetary War.

RR-51

The German G36A1 Euro-rifle, Russo-Chinese AKC-27 Kalashnikov MK2, and North American M26A1 caseless weapons were the main battle rifles for the UN ground forces until 2051 when the UN RR-51 rail rifle was introduced. This new rifle was designed specifically for use in space, but found its way into the hands of the general infantry after all UN forces were placed under the control of the UNSC. The RR-51 had a top-mounted, clear polymer, twenty-five-round box magazine and was capable of single shots, tri-bursts, and fully automatic fire. The weapon could empty the magazine in two seconds with one pull of the trigger in full auto mode. Although it did not carry the number of rounds of a conventional weapon, its ability to be used in a vacuum made the UN RR-51 a major success for the UN forces, which is why the rifle remained in service as the main combat weapon of the UNSC forces until the introduction of energy weapons.

RP-55:

The UN used both the Austrian Glock model 55 and the Russo-Chinese Stechkin-21 in the .36 caliber/9 millimeter pistol caliber, while the North and South American UN forces used any number of Colt 1911 variants. These various pistols were used up until 2055 when they were all replaced by the UN RP-55 (.40 caliber, .4 KW) rail pistol. This new weapon was built primarily for use in space environments, but found its way into becoming the mainline sidearm for UN forces. The weapon was capable of being used as a machine pistol and thus able to fire its entire clip of thirteen rounds in less than a second.

EMG-01:

EURO-Machine Gun Type-1 was introduced in 2023 during the third world war. The EMG-01 was basically a lightweight, belt-fed general purpose machine gun that used caseless ammunition. It was reliable, but underpowered and required a lot of maintenance to keep the residue of its caseless ammo from fouling the gas system. Nonetheless, it became the main field rifle of the NATO powers in 2024, and was used up until 2055 by various members of the European and Asian units of the UN. It was normally fitted with a lightweight plastic box magazine that held a fifty-round belt of disintegrating belt-linked caseless ammunition.

ECA-45 (Enhanced Combat Armor):

Actual combat armor for infantry did not come into use until the beginning of the Asian-Pacific Conflict of the late 2040s. Prior to that conflict, body armor consisted of full suits of Kevlar armor and other ballistic fabrics and plastics. However, the UN ground forces that faced the cyborg legions of the Cyber-State Society required a suit with the ability to withstand considerable punishment and be used in nearly any environment including regions that had been contaminated by nuclear, biological, or chemical attacks. After numerous defeats at the hands of the Cyber-State, the European Union developed and produced a new combat armor capable of meeting the standards necessary to deal with the cyborg nation. The ECA-45 combat armor was reissued almost immediately after the Asian-Pacific Conflict to their GIs when the militia/USA began equipping their general infantry soldiers with a combat armor. The ECA-45 was used by the UNSC, the Solar Empire, and the Union of Solar Republics well after the Great War and 1st Interplanetary War.

EVA-48 (Space Suit):

In 2030, the UN space force issued a light EVA space suit/armor to their forces called the EVA-30. This suit was designed for the harsh conditions of outer space, but not the rigors of combat. The suit was identical to most of the space suits of the early 2000s and was thus bulky. After a UN special operations unit uncovered and stopped the Cyber-State's construction of the first purpose-built combat shuttle, the UN high command began to rethink what future wars would look like. Space would most certainly become a battleground at some point, and therefore, a new generation of EVA suits would be needed to provide crews of future spacecraft with a more durable and flexible standard issue EVA suit. This idea came to fruition in 2048 when the EVA-48 was produced. The EVA-48 remained the standard EVA suit for the UNSC, Solar Empire, and USR throughout most of the 21st century.
